Topical Fluoride Treatment- Topical fluoride treatments are usually performed during an appointment with the hygienist. A tray with fluoridated gel or foam is placed in the patients mouth for one minute. This type of fluoride helps to prevent decay and strengthens teeth by remineralizing them. Historically, this procedure has been performed once each year for children under the age of 13. Recently, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Association have released findings that show topical fluoride treatments are beneficial for children and adults with risk factors for decay. Because this type of fluoride is placed on the teeth and not swallowed, it is safe for use in conjunction with fluoride rinses, and fluoride prescribed by physicians. We recommend topical fluoride for everyone with risk factors for cavities each time they see the hygienist. Fluoride Varnish-Fluoride Varnish is a topical application of fluoride which hardens on the teeth and helps to reduce sensitivity. It is generally applied to specific areas of the mouth where there may be receding gums or other specific sensitivity. |
